Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh broccoli florets (firm, bright green)
  • 6 slices crispy bacon
  • 1/2 cup sweet raisins
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion
  • 1/4 cup toasted sunflower seeds or chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts, or pecans) – optional but recommended

Dressing

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise or Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon honey or sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon reserved bacon fat (optional, for smoky flavor)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the broccoli: Wash and drain fresh broccoli thoroughly, then chop into bite-sized florets. For an extra tender crunch, briefly blanch in boiling water for 1-2 minutes and transfer to ice water to stop cooking.
  2. Cook the bacon: Fry bacon over medium heat until crisp. Drain on paper towels and crumble into small pieces. Save a teaspoon of the bacon fat if you want to add smoky flavor to the dressing.
  3. Chop additional ingredients: Thinly slice red onion. If using nuts or seeds, toast them lightly in a dry pan to enhance their flavor.
  4. Make the dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise (or Greek yogurt), apple cider vinegar, honey, salt, and pepper until smooth and balanced. Stir in reserved bacon fat if using.
  5. Combine all ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, toss broccoli florets, crumbled bacon, raisins, onion slices, and toasted seeds. Pour dressing over and stir gently to coat everything evenly.
  6. Chill and serve: Cover and refrigerate the salad for at least an hour to allow flavors to meld beautifully before serving.

Notes

  • Use the freshest broccoli for the crispiest results.
  • Chilling the salad enhances flavor and texture fusion.
  • Adjust dressing acidity and sweetness to your taste before mixing.
  • Adding a teaspoon of reserved bacon fat to the dressing adds smoky depth.
  • The salad tastes better the next day — ideal for make-ahead meals or parties.
