Ingredients

Scale

Basic Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free baking mix for gluten-free option)
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Optional Add-ins

  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts, pecans, or almonds)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (semi-sweet or white)
  • Swirls of peanut butter or caramel as desired

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter: Melt the butter gently on the stove or in the microwave until smooth. Whisk in the granulated sugar until combined. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until you have a thick, fudgy, and glossy batter.
  2. Bake the Brownie Sheet: Pour the batter evenly into a greased or parchment-lined rectangular baking pan. Use a spatula to smooth the top. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, just until the edges are set but the center remains soft to ensure a tender, fudgy roll.
  3. Roll the Brownie: Once baked, immediately turn the warm brownie sheet onto a clean kitchen towel lightly dusted with powdered sugar. Gently peel off the parchment paper. Starting from one edge, slowly roll the brownie with the towel inside. Rolling it while warm helps prevent cracks and forms the signature roll shape.
  4. Cool and Slice: Allow the rolled brownie to cool completely at room temperature. Carefully unroll it and add any desired filling such as frosting, nuts, or jam. Roll it back up tightly and slice into even pieces to serve individual brownie rolls.

Notes

  • Use high-quality unsweetened cocoa powder for the best chocolate flavor.
  • Do not overbake; remove the brownies when the center still looks slightly underdone to keep them fudgy.
  • Roll the brownie while it is warm to prevent cracks and maintain pliability.
  • If adding fillings, chill the roll before slicing to ensure clean, neat pieces.
  • Use parchment paper and dust the towel with powdered sugar to prevent sticking or tearing.
