Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (lean or regular)
  • 34 medium Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into bite-sized cubes
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 23 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter

Optional Herbs and Spices

  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1 tsp rosemary
  • Additional optional: shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese for cheesy twist
  • Optional spice additions: chili powder or fresh jalapeños
  • Optional veggies: bell peppers, peas, spinach
  • Optional fresh herbs for garnish: parsley or cilantro

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Peel and chop the potatoes into bite-sized cubes to ensure even cooking. Dice the onion and mince the garlic to release their flavors as they cook.
  2. Brown the Ground Beef: Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Season generously with salt and pepper.
  3. Sauté Onions and Garlic: Once the beef is browned, add diced onions and garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the onions become translucent and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Cook Potatoes: Add the cubed potatoes to the skillet and stir well to combine with the beef mixture. Cover the skillet and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes are tender and golden brown.
  5. Final Seasoning and Serve: Taste and adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, or any herbs you prefer. Once the potatoes are fully cooked, serve immediately with optional garnishes like fresh parsley, green onions, or sour cream.

Notes

  • Choose waxy potatoes like Yukon Gold for firmer texture or starchy potatoes like Russet for creamier results.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan to ensure potatoes brown nicely rather than steam.
  • Properly brown the ground beef for rich flavor and depth.
  • Add fresh herbs like parsley or thyme just before serving to brighten flavors.
  • Cover the skillet while cooking potatoes to trap steam and speed cooking without drying out the dish.
