Ingredients

Scale

For the Salisbury Steak Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

For the Mushroom & Onion Gravy

  • 1 tablespoon butter or oil (for cooking)
  • 1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the Garlic Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup warm milk or cream
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until just combined to avoid toughening the meat. Shape the mixture into oval-shaped patties, ensuring they are roughly the same size for even cooking.
  2. Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil or butter. Sear the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side until nicely browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside, leaving the drippings in the pan.
  3. Make the Mushroom & Onion Gravy: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and mushrooms to the drippings. Cook slowly until soft and golden, about 6-8 minutes. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir continuously for about one minute to create a roux. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, allowing the gravy to simmer until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Prepare Garlic Mashed Potatoes: Meanwhile, boil the peeled and quartered potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 15 minutes. Drain, then mash with butter, minced garlic, and warm milk or cream. Whip until smooth and creamy, seasoning with salt and pepper.
  5. Combine and Serve: Return the cooked patties to the pan with the mushroom and onion gravy. Simmer together for a few minutes to meld flavors. Serve the Salisbury Steak smothered in gravy alongside a generous portion of garlic mashed potatoes for a perfect comforting meal.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the beef mixture to keep patties tender and juicy.
  • Brown patties well to lock in flavor and juices.
  • Use warm milk when mashing potatoes to achieve creamy, lump-free texture.
  • Caramelize onions slowly for deep, sweet flavor in the gravy.
  • Adjust gravy thickness by adding broth if too thick or simmering longer if too thin.
  • Let cooked patties rest for a couple of minutes to retain juices.
