For the Salisbury Steak Patties
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
For the Mushroom & Onion Gravy
- 1 tablespoon butter or oil (for cooking)
- 1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
For the Garlic Mashed Potatoes
- 2 lbs Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup warm milk or cream
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until just combined to avoid toughening the meat. Shape the mixture into oval-shaped patties, ensuring they are roughly the same size for even cooking.
- Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil or butter. Sear the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side until nicely browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside, leaving the drippings in the pan.
- Make the Mushroom & Onion Gravy: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and mushrooms to the drippings. Cook slowly until soft and golden, about 6-8 minutes. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir continuously for about one minute to create a roux. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, allowing the gravy to simmer until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Prepare Garlic Mashed Potatoes: Meanwhile, boil the peeled and quartered potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 15 minutes. Drain, then mash with butter, minced garlic, and warm milk or cream. Whip until smooth and creamy, seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Combine and Serve: Return the cooked patties to the pan with the mushroom and onion gravy. Simmer together for a few minutes to meld flavors. Serve the Salisbury Steak smothered in gravy alongside a generous portion of garlic mashed potatoes for a perfect comforting meal.
Notes
- Don’t overmix the beef mixture to keep patties tender and juicy.
- Brown patties well to lock in flavor and juices.
- Use warm milk when mashing potatoes to achieve creamy, lump-free texture.
- Caramelize onions slowly for deep, sweet flavor in the gravy.
- Adjust gravy thickness by adding broth if too thick or simmering longer if too thin.
- Let cooked patties rest for a couple of minutes to retain juices.
