Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp and Protein

  • 1 pound fresh or thawed shrimp, peeled and deveined

Vegetables

  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 3 medium potatoes, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Liquids & Fats

  • 4 cups chicken or seafood broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Seasonings

  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh herbs (parsley or thyme), optional

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Peel and devein shrimp if not already done. Dice onion, celery, carrots, and potatoes into bite-sized pieces. Mince the garlic finely to infuse flavor.
  2. Sauté the Vegetables: Heat butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add diced onion, celery, and carrots. Cook until softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until aromatic.
  3. Cook the Potatoes and Broth: Add diced potatoes and broth to the pot. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are tender, around 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Add the Shrimp: Stir in shrimp and cook just until they turn pink and opaque, about 3 to 4 minutes. Avoid overcooking to keep shrimp tender.
  5. Stir in Cream and Season: Lower heat and pour in the cream, stirring to combine. Season with salt, pepper, and fresh herbs if using. Heat gently without boiling to keep the chowder silky smooth.
  6. Serve and Enjoy: Once heated through and perfectly seasoned, serve the shrimp chowder hot, optionally garnished with fresh parsley or chives.

Notes

  • Choose fresh shrimp for best texture and flavor; frozen is acceptable if thawed fully.
  • Do not overcook shrimp; add them last to maintain tenderness.
  • Use homemade or high-quality broth to enhance soup depth.
  • For lighter chowder, replace half the cream with milk or broth.
  • You can mash some potatoes in the pot to thicken naturally without flour or starch.
