Vanilla and Chocolate Delight

Vanilla and Chocolate Delight is a creamy, luscious dessert that perfectly balances the warm floral sweetness of vanilla with the deep, slightly bitter richness of chocolate. Easy to prepare and versatile, this treat is ideal for any occasion, from casual family gatherings to elegant celebrations. With layers of smooth custard and airy whipped cream, it offers a delightful texture and irresistible flavor that anyone can master.

Ingredients

Scale

Custard Base

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream (divided)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

Chocolate Layer

  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips (melted)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Custard Base: Whisk together the egg yolks and sugar in a heatproof bowl until the mixture becomes pale and slightly thickened. Heat the whole milk and half of the heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat until it just begins to simmer—do not boil. Gradually pour the warm milk mixture into the egg yolks while whisking constantly to temper the eggs and prevent curdling. Return the combined mixture to the saucepan and cook gently over low-medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  2. Infuse Vanilla and Chocolate: Remove the custard from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and butter until fully melted and incorporated for a silky texture. Divide the custard evenly into two portions. In one portion, whisk in the cocoa powder and melted chocolate chips until the mixture is smooth and uniform in color. These two custards form the vanilla and chocolate layers.
  3. Whip the Remaining Cream: In a clean bowl, whip the remaining heavy cream to soft peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream into each custard portion separately to lighten the texture and add airy creaminess to both the vanilla and chocolate components.
  4. Layer and Chill: Spoon alternating layers of the vanilla and chocolate custards into serving glasses or dishes. For an attractive swirl effect, gently stir once after pouring the layers. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours until the dessert is set and thoroughly chilled before serving.

Notes

  • Choose pure vanilla extract and high-quality cocoa powder to maximize flavor.
  • Temper the eggs slowly with the warm milk to avoid curdling and ensure a smooth custard.
  • Fold whipped cream gently to maintain a light and airy texture.
  • Allow sufficient refrigeration time for the dessert to fully set and the flavors to meld.
  • Serve in clear glasses or jars to showcase the beautiful vanilla and chocolate layers.
